Sea Search Launched

‘Fiery Finger’ Seen

A fiery finger which streaked across ocean skies near Newport and Laguna last night plunged into the sea and caused a wide-spread search by a Coast Guard cutter and three Marine helicopters.

The unidentified flying object appeared shortly after dark, setting off a series of telephone calls to Laguna Beach police. Residents placed the time of the sighting at 5:45 p.m. Marine Corps officials said the burning object was about the size of an airplane and was seen by coastal residents to plunge into the ocean causing the ocean to boil and steam to erupt at the point of impact.
