De mediados de julio a mediados de
septiembre, por lo tanto, se conocieron cinco casos de pequeñas entidades, no
mayores de tres pies (0.92 metros) de altura, en Quebradillas, San Juan,
Loíza y Corozal. De ellos, uno ocurre en julio, dos en agosto y otros dos en
septiembre. Empero, en septiembre todavía tendrían lugar otros enigmáticos
hechos.
Revuelo en Mayagüez
Dos días antes de la
aparición de los “muñecos" en Corozal, un ovni ocasionó la movilización
de la Policía y de cientos de ciudadanos en la ciudad de Mayagüez.
El miércoles 14 de
septiembre el teniente César Gracia fue testigo, junto a docenas de mayagüez
anos, del paso de un objeto luminoso a eso de las 9:30 de la noche. El ovni,
luego de pasar sobre la ciudad a una altura estimada de unos 3,000 pies
(1,000 metros) se detuvo en la bahía de Mayagüez a una distancia estimada de
un kilómetro de la costa. El señor Luis A. Báez, testigo ocular del fenómeno,
narró así su experiencia:
"Después de las
nueve, me llamaron para que mirara en dirección al mar. Vi un objeto volador
redondo, rojo tirando a amarillo, que iba bajando poco a poco. Apareció
entonces otro objeto un poco más grande que se acercó al otro. Se quedaron
los dos al nivel del mar, uno junto al otro, por aproximadamente dos minutos.
El que apareció segundo se viró y se metió dentro del agua lentamente. La
otra luz estuvo en el mismo sitio más o menos por diez minutos más. Me subí
al techo del edificio para ver mejor. Fue entonces que el objeto luminoso
comenzó a moverse hacia un lado y hacia otro. Parecía entrar y salir del
agua. La luz se encendía y apagaba y se apagaba totalmente de vez en cuando.
Como sé que hay luces de varias boyas, yo verifiqué que las luces no se me
confundieran con las de este objeto brillante. El objeto estuvo entrando y
saliendo del agua hasta las tres de la madrugada".598
La policía de Mayagüez
recibió tantas llamadas que tuvo que enviar refuerzos al área playera de
Columbus Landing, donde cientos de curiosos crearon una crítica situación en
el tráfico vehicular. El propio teniente Gracia se personó al lugar y
posteriormente rindió el informe 5-11-0814 en base a su experiencia.
Al siguiente día la
noticia fue titular obligado en El Mundo, El Vocero, Momento, y El
Nuevo Día. Según estos medios informativos, la unidad marítima de la
Policía habría de realizar una inspección de la zona "para conocer si el
aparato dejó algún indicio en el lugar que pudiese utilizarse para la
identificación de rigor". Agentes del Negociado de Investigaciones
Criminales --según se señaló-- también recibieron instrucciones de investigar
el suceso. La Guardia Costanera, por su parte, dijo que "no tenemos
ningún tipo de ejercicio sobre esa área".
A los pocos días
comenzaron a circular noticias de que todo se trataba del lanzamiento de un
globo experimental desde el Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez. Esta
posibilidad fue investigada por el señor Freddy Badillo Javariz, fundador meses
antes en Aguadilla del Centro Regional de Estudios Ovnis, grupo que
desde entonces ha desarrollado una magnífica labor. En carta del 28 de
septiembre, la Ayudante Especial del Rector, señora Myria Arrarás de García,
indicaba que:
"Pláceme indicarle
que el Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez no ha realizado ningún experimento
de esta clase. Le estoy acompañando copia de las cartas que nos remitieran
los directores de diferentes departamentos de esta Institución relacionada
con esta situación".
La noticia sobre el avistamiento mayagüez
ano circulo el globo terráqueo a través de Prensa Asociada. A principios de
noviembre, el periodista Bob Pratts del National Enquirer hizo una extensa
investigación del suceso, publicando un artículo en el numero del 28 de
febrero de 1978.
De nuevo, y como desde
1952, Mayagüez volvía a ser escenario de un importante avistamiento ovni.
From mid July to mid September five cases were uncovered
of small entities, not higher than three feet (.92 meter) tall, in
“Quebradillas, San Juan, Loiza and Corozal”. Of these cases, one occurs in
July, two in August and other two in September, although, in September other
enigmatic occurrences will happen yet.
Excitement in Mayagüez
Two days
before the “dolls” appearance in “Corozal”, a UFO caused the mobilization of
the police and hundred of citizens in the city of “Mayagüez”.
On
Wednesday the 14th of
September Lieutenant Cesar Gracia was a witness, together with dozens
of “Mayagüez” residents, of the passage of a luminous object around 9:30 PM.
The UFO, after flying over the city at an estimated height of 3,000 feet
(1,000 meters) stopped
in the Mayagüez bay, at a distance of approximately one kilometer from
the shore.
Mr. Luis A. Baez, eyewitness of the phenomenon, told us
about the experience in the following manner:
“After nine
o’clock, they called me, to ask me to look in the direction of the sea, I saw
a round flying object, red with yellow hues that was descending slowly, then
another object a bit bigger appeared, that got close to the first object. They remained together at sea
level, one next to the other, for approximately two minutes. The second
object turned and entered the water slowly. The other light remained
in the same spot for about ten minutes longer. I climbed to the roof of the
building to be able to see it better. It was then that the luminous object
began to move from side to side. It seemed to enter and leave the water. The light would blink
on and off and it extinguished itself totally intermittently. Because I know
that there are some navigational buoys, I verified that the lights would not
be confused with those from this brilliant object. The object continued to enter and exit the water
until three in the morning.598
The Mayagüez police received so many
calls, that they needed to send reinforcements to the beach area of Columbus
Landing, were hundreds of sightseers created a critical traffic situation.
Lieutenant Gracia went to the site in person and later submitted the report
5-11-0814 based on his experience.
The next
day the news was an obligated front-page item in “El Mundo, El Vocero,
Momento, and El Nuevo Dia. According to these sources, the maritime unit of
the police would conduct an inspection on the area “To find out if the
apparatus left any indication in the area that could be used for
identification”. Agents of the Criminal Investigations Bureau – as it was
remarked—also received instructions to investigate the case. The Coast Guard
on the other hand said, “We are not conducting any exercise in that area”
Few days
later news began circulate saying that all it was, was the launching of an
experimental balloon from the University of Mayagüez. This possibility was
investigated by Mr. Freddy Badillo Javariz, founder, few months earlier in
“Aguadilla” of the Regional Center for UFO Studies, a group that since then
has developed a magnificent work. In a letter dated 28th of September, the
Dean Special Assistant, Mrs. Myria Arraras de Garcia indicated that:
“I am
pleased to indicate that the University of Mayagüez has not conducted any
experiment of this kind. I am enclosing copies of the letters received from
the directors of different departments from this institution related to the
situation”
The news
about the sighting in Mayagüez circulated the globe thru Associated Press. In
the beginning of November the reporter Bob Pratts from the National Enquirer,
conducted an intensive investigation of the occurrence, publishing an article
in the issue of 28 of February of 1978.
Again and
as from 1952 Mayagüez was again the center of an important UFO sighting.
