Sighting Description: Some fishing boats sounded the alarm on the radio because a small tourist airplane exploded in flight and plunged into the sea at some distance from the island of Stromboli. A communication indicated that rather than an airplane, it was a helicopter which had taken of from the American base at Naples. After five hours the search, performed by rescue services from the port of Salerno, was suspended. Some sources reported the sighting as happening on the 15th of the month rather than the 16th  and described the point of impact as being in various parts of the sea near the island of Stromboli.
