CISU
Case: 188
Location: Lido di Venezia (Shore
of Venezia “Venice”)
Category D: Objects in navigation or objects that
stop on the surface of the water.
Evaluation:
Probable algae
Original
Sighting
Description:
During the night, the waves of the shoreline suddenly turned from a variable
bright color of blue to pink. During the day, the same waves appeared red. In
addition, someone who went near the water was able to notice the presence of
a glow, probably caused by the decomposition of protozoa that could suddenly
have been proliferating in the area. In particular, it could be about the noctiluca scintillans1 or some particular algae.

NOTE 1: Noctiluca
scintillans are little ocean creatures commonly
known as the seasparkle. Floating in swarms of
millions, these bioluminescent organisms cause the glowing of the sea. High
concentrations of their plankton food source that likely result from
environmental conditions are implicated in population blooms of Noctiluca scintillans known as
"red tides.” –H J-
