On 2 December 1971, Sr. Ricardo Jorge Espindola and several companions were hunting seals in the cold clear waters of the Golfo de Matias off the north cape of Punta Norte. At about 15:00 in the afternoon they had taken a number of seals and he was shooting a picture of two of his friends with some of the seal carcasses. He had color slide film in his camera.

Suddenly the water about a quarter of a mile offshore began to roil violently and a large circular craft emerged from the turbulence coming directly towards them and then curved away and flew out to sea. He snapped the picture and lowered the camera in stunned surprise. The object was far away before he recovered his composure and remembered to try for another. He decided it was too distant and did not take the second picture.

[T]He object was circular and of a dark color, and was closely surrounded by a reddish haze or halo effect that gave the whole craft a reddish cast.

We have been unable to substantially verify this case because the photographer is a transient sailor aboard ship and we have not been able to catch up with him. He gave the pictures to a friend who later revealed their existence with the story described above.

From a personal letter from Sr. Guillermo-'Carlos Roncoroni.

Note: This story appears twice in the same pages; however the above text, seemingly from the letter, does not mention “The object was soundless and left no trail.” which appears in the retelling of the letter on page 170.
