Sighting Description: Several people reported to the Port Authority of La Spezia that a plane had crashed in the sea 15 miles off the coast of La Gorgona Island. The crew of the Panamanian oil tanker Driade observed a plane nosedive with a great flame; at the same time, some fishermen had noticed the same flame off the coast of Viareggio, and they had notified the police. The search and rescue operations, undertaken by tugboats, airplanes from La Spezia and Vigna di Valle Airports, and the mine sweepers Magnolia and Verbena, yielded no positive results.
