Go Back Report # 498

06-??-1976

Baker Watson
Jacksonville, Florida

I can't believe I'm writing this letter to a perfect stranger although when I finished your book, I thought I knew you and believe I can trust you. It was mid June 1976, I think I can find the exact date if needed, while I was at the helm of our sailboat. The kids were fussing about something and Katy, my wife, was in the galley making ready our lunch. It’s been a long time but I remember as if it were yesterday. The sun was almost overhead and the chop was slight on the St Johns River. We were on our way back from Palacka, Florida, where we have relatives.

A hundred feet or so ahead and just off starboard a patch of water exploded with churning bubbles. I thought it was a school offish in a feeding frenzy but I was wrong! That's where it came out of the Water. Right there almost in front of me. We were running with the main sail only three or four knots so I didn't have to angle off. When it cleared the water, it hung there for a little bit, maybe twenty seconds. I couldn't speak as I watched it sitting there on a cloud of dark smoke between it and the water. Then l finally yelled · to Katy and the kids and jumped through the hatch to find my camera. When I got back on deck, the damn thing was a couple hundred feet up just sitting there. That's when I took the picture.

Libi, she was five, started to cry. I reached to pick her up and when I looked back up, it was gone. Allen, he was eleven, said it disappeared and Katy agreed. The picture I took is dark, can't see the portholes, but I know the detail I saw is exactly what's in your book.

Baker Watson's letter gave me detail after detail about himself and his family. He included his phone number, his home address, and his business address. I conclude that he and his family witnessed a true UFO. Unfortunately his camera was slightly out of focus and the UFO was backlit by the sun, but some detail of the UFO can be seen with .the UFO's shadow and the "cloud of dark smoke" still misting over the water. The distant Jacksonville skyline, the river and a portion of the sailboat, confirms the location of this photograph. I consider this UFO sighting to be very reliable.
