Go Back Report # 323

July 28, 1964: Several USO cases are mentioned by Dr. Galindez in a 1974 article entitled, "Marine Implications of the UFO Phenomenon." The judge revealed another USO case in the Patagonian Golfo San Jorge, involving two Argentinean oil tankers and the Norwegian vessel Sumber. All these ships observed after 9 p.m. the apparent fall of an object, perhaps "an aerolite or small comet." However, it was flying "horizontally" and "emitted a luminosity that, at times, became intense," according to the official report submitted by the Sumber skipper to Argentinean naval authorities. The ships looked for possible survivors, but nothing was found. This case has certain similarities to the famous Canadian 1967 UFO crash in Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, discussed in Borderland's November issue.

Two hundred miles south is another deep gulf, the Golfo San Jorge. On 28 July 1964, at 21:24, the subprefectura (sub-prefecture –CF-) at Puerto Madryn, Chubut Province, received a message from the Argentine tanker Cazador, saying that at 21:10 the captain and crew had sighted a strange light that fell into the water. They had plotted its bearings as latitude 45 degrees, 56 minutes and 06 seconds South and 64 degrees, 00 minutes and 00 seconds West longitude. They and another tanker, the San Antonio, searched a five-mile circle looking for survivors and debris. In the afternoon of the next day, the Norwegian ship Sumber arrived in port and the captain reported to the authorities, "Yesterday at about 21:10, as we were approaching the Argentine coast, we observed the fall of an aerial object or small comet (into the waters of the Gulf). It came from the northeast, horizontally, towards shore. It radiated a brilliant light."
