SWEDEN

Unidentified submarine

For those readers who like to be kept informed of mystery objects beneath the waters as well as those seen in the sky, we reprint the following from the London Daily Mail of August 24:

"Ships of the Swedish Navy exploded depth charges and shells near a mystery submarine off the island of Gottland tonight after it ignored orders to surface. The submarine, detected by echo-sounded apparatus, was first ordered to surface through hydrophone contact.

"Then a charge of gunpowder was detonated underwater--the international order to surface. Again the order was ignored, so the Swedish warships dropped two depth charges ‘a safe distance from the submarine’ and fired anti-submarine shells.

"The Swedish Board of Defense, announcing this tonight, said the submarine then left the area.
