LIGHT ON RIVER STARTS BOAT HUNT

Niagara Falls, N.Y. July 26th - Rescue units late tonight searched the swirling waters of the Niagara River about a half mile above the falls after receiving a series of reports of a light believed from a boat in mid-river.

The light was reported first by Carl Wright, Niagara Falls Civil Defense Director. He saw it about 9 near Cayuga Island,
four miles above the falls. An Army helicopter which joined the search in response from Wright reported seeing a light near the Niagara Power Project intake structure about 3 miles above the falls. The helicopter had to abandon the search because of the heavy rain and electrical storm. The search was concentrated in the vicinity of Rock Island after Cpl. Donald Stewart and Patrolman Robert Szabo of the State Park Police reported seeing a light there shortly before 11.

Police said the area in which the light was last reported was above
the rapids and it appeared possible that if it was a boat, it could have become hung up on rocks in the river.

Joining in the search were a Fire Department Rescue Duck from Engine 5 in Niagara Falls and an outboard boat operated by Patrolman William Szabo of Niagara Falls force.
