Sometime in March or April of 1943, the destroyer USS Williamson (DD-244) was on patrol supporting the invasions of Attu and Kiska in the Aleutian Chain when the forward gun crews noted a string of brilliant red orbs following the ship slightly forward of the port bow. The sighting was made late at night and lasted for at least an hour. Reports vary from four to eight orbs, but the orbs were within one hundred yards of the ship and described as being as large as a cantaloupe held at arm's length. No one saw these lights approach and they appeared in a slanted line with the orb closest to the water being only about thirty feet above the ocean. They reportedly made no sound and the Captain of the ship (LCDR Frederick Norman Kivette) was said to have turned towards the lights, but they remained out of reach. No report follows of what happened to the lights or how the ship lost contact with them. The ship did not open fire upon the strange orbs and no official inquiry was ever launched into the incident. (See note 2.)
1943 Early; Bearing [sic – Bering] Sea, N. of Alaskan Peninsula
2300 hours. While patrolling the Bearing [sic] Sea, N. of Alaskan Peninsula and bearing north at about 20 knots, a gunner on starboard 20 mm gun was on watch on the USS Williamson. It was a very dark night and he reported a row of at least eight red lights in a row, traveling parallel and slightly ahead of his ship. The row was canted at about a 15 degree angle to the surface of the sea. The lights paced the ship for about an hour until the watch was relieved. Witness wasn't able to find out what happened after his incident.
