On September 10 in 1972, crew of the Soviet cruiser Varyag observed an object that rapidly "fell" into the ocean close to the Kuril Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Initially, the object resembled a sphere, but descending into the water, it changed its shape to that of [a] cone. No splashes were observed.
