On October 21, 1989, another strange object was observed by the inhabitants of the Kuril Islands and the crew of [the] ship Egvekinot. The object flew over Shikotan Island at an altitude of approximately one kilometer. The black nucleus, located inside a red sphere, was separated into three parts by silvery rays. Their glimmer was so strong that it reflected in the sea water. During the flight of that UFO, [the] radar screen experienced interferences. This was reported in the 1989 article in the local newspaper Sovetsky Sakhalin by V. Plotnikov in his article “NLO ili gazovoye oblako (UFO or a gas cloud?).”
