Go Back Report # 1386

10-22-1991

October 22, 1991: Nr. Wigan, Lancashire, UK

The following report by Bill Eatock was passed to me by Tony Dodd of Quest International, who spoke to the witness on the telephone immediately after the incident:

I purchased some walkie-talkie radios today and I decided to test them for range. At about 7:45 p.m., I left one radio with my wife at home and set off in my car, driving progressively further away, speaking to my wife at regular intervals to get some idea of the range of reception. At about 8:00 p.m., I was driving along a country road; it was a dark, clear, dry night, and reception on the radio was very good.

As I drove slowly along the road, I suddenly saw a wall of fog in front of me and was surprised that it started so suddenly. I drove into the fog and immediately heard a very high-pitched whining sound. The sound was gaining in intensity, to the extent that it was hurting my ears. I was unable to see anything due to the fog. By this time, the sound was overpowering and I reached for the car radio to see if it was turned on, but it wasn't. My ears were really hurting by this time and I was fast becoming disorientated. In desperation, I pulled the wires out of the car radio in case it was coming from there, and I made certain the walkie-talkie was turned off, but the sound continued.

At this stage, everything got confused, and the next thing I remember was driving out of the fog to a totally clear road and the sound had stopped. Another strange thing was that this road is usually quite busy with other cars, but I never saw one. I drove home feeling sick, with my left ear and left side of my face burning. On my arrival home, my wife noticed that the left side of my face appeared to have been sunburned1. I don't know what caused this, but I feel ill...

Additional reports of UFO activity that night were received and published by the Wigan Reporter (October 31, 1991), although it is evident to me that many of these were caused by a laser display at Blackpool.

Note 1: This was portrayed in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, BUT it appeared on the driver’s right side. Of course, in the UK the driver sits on the right side, so tilting his head out of the window would expose his left side.
