Submerged Object,

SIGHTED IN COOK STRAIT

The mysterious submerged object which was reported off Kaikoura by the barquentine Mary Isabel and the steamer Turakina last month, and which was unsuccessfully searched for by the Amokura and the Cygnet, now promises to cause some uneasiness to those navigating Cook Strait. On arrival at Lyttelton, from Wellington, Captain Stevens, of the Manapouri, reported that on Thursday evening a submerged object was passed, about 16 miles south, 18 deg. west magnetic from Pencarrow Head. The object appeared to be about 12 feet long and 6 feet wide, and it was just awash. The Manapouri left Wellington at 5 o’clock in the evening, and it was too dark to investigate the object. This danger to navigation when sighted on Thursday night was right in the track of steamers running between Wellington and Lyttelton. The object would drift a considerable distance in 24 hours, but it was considered advisable that all vessels leaving Wellington should be warned, and therefore the Marine Department issued a special “Warning to Shipmasters” on Friday. The Marine Department advises that the Government training ship Amokura, which has previously spent a week in a futile search for the obstacle, left Picton on Saturday morning for a second quest. Captain Manning, of the Mararoa, stated that he saw no sign of the submerged object, and similar statements were made by the masters of the steamer Wootton and the schooner Falcon.
