Seeing is believing and John Krebs of Plainview believes he saw a boat explode in Oyster Bay Harbor at 7:45 last night.

Krebs, who lives at 20 Edison Ave., told police he was about three miles offshore in a boat when he saw a flash to the right of him. The flash grew bigger, and he thought he could make pit (sic-out) the outline of a boat. Then there was a curl of black smoke, he said.

Although he didn’t hear an explosion, he said he was sure it was an engine on fire.

A speedboat pulled alongside of him, Krebs said, asked “if I saw the flash.” We both headed for the area, but found no trace of a boat or debris.

Krebs then headed for shore and called police.

Police and Coast Guard boats searched the area but reported they could find no trace of an explosion.
